Brockhaus-Efron Jewish Encyclopedia  Velikiye Luki is a district town in the Pskov province. In 1865, the first Jews arrived here, immigrants

from Nevel, who suffered from a fire. The governor allowed them to live in the city and district, despite the fact that the province was not part

of the Jewish Pale of Settlement. According to the 1897 census, there were over 123 thousand inhabitants in the district, of which 1,251 were

Jews; in V.L. there resided 8,466, of which there were 669 Jews. The most common occupation among Jews is making clothes. In 1907, one

house of worship was officially registered in V.L. In 1905, in connection with the promulgation of the manifesto on October 17, anti-Jewish riots

arose and people were killed.
